The goal of this study was quantitatively determine the recovery effects of herbal medicines (HM) on the alpha-synuclein (α-Syn)-induced Parkinson's disease. In the present study, the detoxification effects of 270 HM in a yeast model of Parkinson's disease that had been damaged by α-Syn were evaluated using a growth and CFU assay. After the first round of screening, candidate HMs were selected based on the viability rate. The efficacy of the selected herbs was then determined by viability analysis. Of the extracts evaluated, 12 HM (Oroxylum indicum (OI), Cuscuta chinensis (CC), Pogostemon cablin (PC), Trichosanthis Semen (TS), Ephedrae Herba (EH), Sinapis alba (SA), Prunus japonica (PJ), Houttuynia cordata (HC), Ligustrum japonicum (LJ), Nelumbonis Semen (NS), Perillae Ramulus (PR), and Rehmannia glutinosa (RG)) displayed a detoxification effect on α-Syn-induced damage in a yeast model of Parkinson's disease. Taken together, these results suggest that TS, PJ, PR, PC, and CC are the best candidate HM for the prevention or treatment of α-Syn-induced Parkinson's disease. Therefore, additional studies should be conducted to determine if these HM possess can be used as novel therapeutic agents for the prevention or treatment of Parkinson's disease. © 2012 The Korean Society of Toxicogenomics and Toxicoproteomics and Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.
